Access to InformationBooks and Media Materials
The JSCC Library homepage is the place to start for finding information for your academic assignments. Use the Library Resources menu to find books, reference sources, media materials, articles from periodicals, and search tools for finding internet web sites.
Use the Library Services menu to get help using our services and finding the information sources you need.
- The Online Catalog allows you to search for books and media materials in the library
- When you find something you need, fill out the Request a Book form and the books or media materials will be sent to your home or to one of the Learning Resource Centers. You are responsible for mailing the book back or returning it to the Library or one of the Centers.
- If you don't find what you are looking for, another option is to request the article from another library through Interlibrary Loan.
Electronic information
A lot of information resources are available electronically; you can retrieve them from any computer with internet access.
Library Materials online

There are three main types of materials that you can find electronically in the JSCC Library: (a)Scholarly, Trade or Popular interest magazines and journals; (b) Newspapers, and (c)books.
- You search for magazine, journal and newspaper articles by using Find a Journal.
- Many articles are available in full-text when you find them in Find a Journal.
- If the article is not full text, go to E-journals and search for the journal in another database.
- If the journal is not available in another database, go to the Library' Periodicals list, available from the Library Collections page, to see if it is available in the Library. Then fill out the Request an Article form. We will photocopy the article and mail it to you.
- The last option is to request the article from another library through Interlibrary Loan.
Pay close attention to the source that you use; your instructor may require you to find specific types of materials.
Electronic Books

Sometimes you need the in-depth or background information provided by books and reference books.
- The JSCC Library has a collection or over 50,000 electronic books covering subjects including literature, business, history, religion, health/medicine, sociology, science, education, computer sciences, and more. Many have been published recently and provide current information. These can be found through the JSCC Online Catalog. You can click on "Find a book" on the JSCC Library home page. (http://library.jscc.edu) and access these electronic books provided through NetLibrary.
- Safari is a collection of electronic books for programmers and IT professionals. Search electronic versions of a broad range of technical books. Reference sources, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and literary criticism compilations are also available electronically. "Find a Journal" to use for finding reference sources include the following: Bartleby.com, Oxford Reference Online ,Health & Wellness Resource Center.
- Additionally, older works that are no longer protected by copyright are sometimes available on the internet. Project Gutenberg is a good site to try for works of literature. You can also use an Internet search engine and put the title of the book in quotation marks. For example: “The Art of War”. If a search for the title results in unrelated pages, type the author's last name after the title, for example: “Emma” Austen. If there are still too many unrelated pages, try typing the word âtext' after the author's name, for example: “A Doll' House” Ibsen text. If the work was originally written in another language, make sure that the translation you find is acceptable to your instructor.
